Record Slow Start to Severe Weather Season in March

March has gotten off to a record quiet start this year for severe weather. So far, there has been zero Tornado or Severe Thunderstorm Watches for the month of March. Greg Cabin with the Storm Prediction Center recently said “This has never happened in the record of SPC (Storm Prediction Center) watches dating back to 1970." The SPC, located in Norman, Oklahoma is responsible for issuing severe weather watches for the entire nation.

The reason for the lack of severe weather? Well, the current weather patterns just does not support it. "We're in a persistent pattern that suppresses severe weather, and the right ingredients -- moisture, instability, and lift -- have not been brought together in any consistent way so far this year." Said Cabin in a press release.

Although severe weather may not be in the forecast now, it does not mean you should not be prepared. As all of us Oklahoman’s know, the pattern can change at any moment. Do not let your guard down just because we have not seen anything yet!
